then intubated with 4-0 uncuffed ET tube. Placed bird in dorsal
recumbency after removed wing wrap and bandage. Plucked feathers
on ventral radius and at carpus, scrubbed site and prepped area
for surgery. Incised skin over wound site with #15 blade. Explored
wound site, bone all looks healthy. Flushed area with saline.
Placed IM pin in the distal radial fragment, out the flexed
carpus, then drove across the fracture site to seat near the
elbow. Took x-rays to confirm placement. Closed wound wiht
4-0 webcryl in a simple interrupted pattern. Bent IM pin around
the dorsal aspect of the wing, secured down with tegaderm. Placed
figure-8 wrap back on wing. Bird recovered uneventfully from
anesthesia. |

O: Changed R wing wrap - open wound on the ventral aspect of the distal radius. Cleaned area, bone present just under the scabbing. Radial fracture feels like it may be already starting to try to stabilize, less crepitus more of a flex felt at the fracture site. Placed honey in wound site, covered with telfa/tegaderm. Replaced figure-8 wrap. Drew blood from the L medial metatarsal vein - blood looks a little watery. MM color is light as well. Slight bruising noted on abdomen as well as small amount of unabsorbed fluids. Weight: 1066.0 grams, BCS: 3.0 S: Transporter reported bird perched in low branches of nearby tree, easy to catch and quiet overnight. Arrived standing in transport box, attempted to jump out. When placed in cage, jumped to back and stood well.
O: Performed intake exam with fundic and radiographs. Medicated with butorphanol after palpation of possible fracture to right radius. Plucked and cleaned wound over right radius fracture site with dilute chlorhex. Flushed site with saline and manually removed some scabbing with forceps. Applied manuka/hydrogel mixture, and covered with telfa/tega. Applied figure 8 wrap. Gave fluids and oral meds. Placed in cage in ICU.

No blood swabbed from throat. Ears: NSF. Eyes: NSF. Wings: Swelling and small laceration over distal R radius. Bruising. Legs: L hock joint lax intermittently. Regular use in hand and in cage. Feet: Small scabs lateral aspect R foot. L foot grip less than that of R intermittnetly. Regular use. Body: Some urates around vent coverts. Feather condition: Ok. Ectoparasites: None. Radiographic findings: Moderately comminuted oblique fracture to distal right radius. Dorsal displacement of distal segment. Initial treatment: 0.21cc butorphanol IM, R of keel. Wound care + bandaging and figure 8 wrap. 30cc room temp LRS R inguinal. 1.6cc Ca Slurry, 0.47cc terbinafine, 0.36cc meloxicam, 2 tabs 65mg Clavamox.
A: Mature hatch year red-tailed hawk presented with comminuted fracture to the distal right radius. Displacement of distal segment of fracture may warrant surgical repair of bone. There is a wound directly over the fracture site but no current visibly exposed bone. The fracture appears very recent and is a good candidate for repair. Guarded prognosis due to slight proximity of fracture to wrist joint and risks of surgery, but otherwise bird is in good condition and is stable should surgery be deemed necessary by veterinarian. Unknown cause of injury - combination of fracture to the right side and small wounds to the lateral aspect of right leg may be indicative of some sort of impact trauma.
P: rx terbinafine, meloxicam, gabapentin, Clavamox, Ca slurry. rx 3D LRS SQ. Change figure 8 wrap and bandages EOD, monitor for bone exposure in radius wound closely, clean and reapply manuka/hydrogel, recover with telfa/tega. 11/24 - vet check, fecal, blood, stain + IOPs, tail guard. SF in AM, HF in PM if DNE beginning 11/25 (or 11/24 if surgery is happening.)
